presented by Dr. Britton Arey
When: July 21, 2017
Check-in: Begins at 11 am
Luncheon: 11:00 to 1:30
Location: Maggiano's Little Italy, 3333 Bristol Street, Costa Mesa, CA
We will discuss the critical importance of therapists and psychiatrists communicating with one another about patients they share -- to avoid fragmentation of care as well as to provide a unified framework for recovery to patients. We will also brainstorm ways to improve communication and collaboration in our field, as well as across disciplines, given the emerging literature about the mind-body connection, and the importance of putting together a cohesive "treatment team" for each patient. While we know time is a precious resource for every clinician, making communication and collaboration part of our responsibility as providers is critical for the health and well-being of the patients entrusted to our care. Together, we can work to find ways to overcome obstacles and barriers to communication that can help our patients move forward more cohesively.
Learning Objectives:
1. To understand and appreciate why communication and collaboration are so important within the mental health field
2. To appreciate the importance of communication and collaboration with patient's other health care practitioners (anyone part of the patients "treatment team")
3. To identify all participants in a patient's "treatment team" that need to be included in communication and collaboration (e.g. Family members, friends, educators, etc)
4. To appreciate the importance of collaboration and integration of care, especially in the child and adolescent population
5. For attendees to name at least 3 ways of overcoming barriers to establishing more communication and collaboration in their own practices, and discuss ways they intend to implement communication and collaboration as both a priority, as well as part of their responsibility as a mental health care provider
