Cultural Humility: Where the Personal and Political Intersect
Presentation Description:
The current sociocultural and political climates and discourse in the United States elucidates the importance of understanding our humanity while fostering deeper cross-cultural relationships. This presentation addresses why cultural humility matters in our work as service providers, the current literature on color-blind racial ideology, and implicit bias. The presentation provides insight into the importance of understanding where our humanity intersects with the political as a way to enhance our service as cultural workers, both personally and professionally.
Participants will be able to:
- Define cultural humility and its impact in cross-cultural relationships
- Discuss the importance of understanding the rationale and limitations of a color-blind racial ideology (CBRI).
- Demonstrate the challenges and benefits of understanding and discussing their own and others cultural identities.

Please make a separate transaction for each and every reservation requested. If you are paying by credit card, the receipt you receive at the end of your payment is your confirmation reservation. Those reserving by check and are reserving for 2 or more may combine payment. ONLY check payments received by deadline will receive an email confirmation 2 days prior to event. Any payments not received by deadline are not reserved and will be considered walk-in status. Please note our cancellation policy on our registration page.
- Course meets the qualifications for 1 hour of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
- Orange County Chapter of CAMFT is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (Provider #59405) to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. Orange County Chapter of CAMFT maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content.
Course completion certificates will be awarded at the end of the program to those attendees who sign-in within 10 minutes of the commencement of the program, sign-out after the program is concluded, and complete and return an evaluation form.
Cancellations are made by leaving a message at 714-556-7129 no later than 2 days prior to the event by 6 PM. A refund less $5.00 processing fee will be returned to you. There are no refunds for cancellations made past this time.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Gallardo is a Professor of Psychology and Director of Aliento, The Center for Latina/o Communities at Pepperdine University. Dr. Gallardo has published refereed journal articles, books, and book chapters in the areas of multicultural psychology, Latina/o psychology, ethics and evidence-based practices, cultural humility, and racial colorblindness. He is currently a Series Editor for Cognella Academic Press’ Advances in Culture, Race, and Ethnicity book series. Dr. Gallardo is currently Director of Research and Evaluation for the Multiethnic Collaborative of Community Agencies (MECCA), a non-profit organization dedicated to serving monolingual Arab, Farsi, Korean, Vietnamese, Cambodian and Spanish speaking communities.
Dr. Gallardo served a 6-year Governor appointed licensed member of the California Board of Psychology. Dr. Gallardo is currently serving a 5-year appointment on the Clergy Misconduct Oversight Board for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Dr. Gallardo is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.
