Course Description:
In this presentation, an Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) view of mental health will serve as the foundation for discussing the central role of the therapist-client relationship in cultivating the integrative growth of the brain in psychotherapy. IPNB weaves a wide array of scientific disciplines into one framework to provide professionals with a comprehensive view of the mind and mental health. By viewing the mind, in part, as an embodied and relational process that regulates the flow of energy and information, we can see how the linking of differentiated parts of a system—integration—may be the source of optimal self-organization.
Integration creates harmony as energy and information flow between the extremes of chaos and rigidity. Symptoms of human suffering have a pattern of falling into these chaotic and rigid states; psychotherapy may lead to healing by promoting integration within the body and its brain, and within relationships of the client. Relationships which honor differences and promote compassionate linkages are integrative connections that likely promote the growth of integration in the brain itself.
This presentation will review the empirical research supporting the proposal that as therapists we are integrationists and use our integrative relationships to stimulate the activity and growth of integration in our clients’ brains for lasting change as they move beyond merely reduction of symptoms to the cultivation of well-being in their lives.
Learning Objectives:
- Summarize how the mind emerges from both the brain and relationships.
- Apply basic concepts of integration to the practice of psychotherapy.
- Recognize the limitations and advantages of science in illuminating the nature of subjective mental experience.
- Summarize basic findings of the social brain.
- Recognize how the self is more than just an individual entity.
