DESCRIPTION

This workshop will provide an introduction to the basic tenets of Internal Family Systems (IFS) with an emphasis on self-reflection as a therapist. Exploration of therapist parts from an IFS lens, and how to personally and experientially connect one's own parts to Self will be addressed.

This course is intended for mental health professional who are new to the topic. Course meets the qualifications for 1 hour of continuing education credit for LMFT's, LCSWs, LPCCs and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. CE completion certificates will be awarded when participants complete the course at the end of the speaker presentation. Only the hour of the speaker's presentation is included in the CE credit.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER

Dr. Maddisen Espeseth is a licensed clinical psychologist with a private practice in Anaheim Hills. She practices from an attachment heavy, neurosequential lens. Dr. Espeseth is a Certified Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapist, IFS Institute Approved Clinical Consultant (IFS-I ACC), Registered Play Therapist (RPT), and Certified Sandplay Therapist (CST). Specific to psychotherapy, she specializes in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and trauma-related disorders. In addition to being a psychotherapist, Dr. Espeseth also provides neurodiversity affirming psychodiagnostic testing services for clients ranging from toddlerhood to midlife. Dr. Espeseth is passionate about providing practical, empowering, and client-specific assessment services that honor and respect each individual's unique neurotype. She has clinical experience in the private practice, residential treatment center (RTC), partial hospitalization program (PHP), intensive outpatient program (IOP), pediatric hospital, and community mental health settings.

SYLLABUS

  1.  Introduction to Internal Family Systems (IFS) (20 minutes)

- Overview of IFS model and basic concepts (parts, Self, burdens)

- The role of therapist parts in daily professional life

- Understanding the parallel process

   2. Identifying and Engaging with Therapist Parts (20 minutes)

- Experiential activity: Witnessing and mapping parts commonly activated in therapy

- Discussion of patterns and triggers

   3. Accessing and Cultivating Self Energy (20 minutes)

- Experiential practice to access Self

- Exploring qualities of Self


EDUCATIONAL GOALS

   1. Expansion of theory/model knowledge via learning IFS tenets and the premise of IFS interventions.

   2. Improvement of clinical skills via personal application of the model as a therapist.

   3. Improvement of ethical clinical practice via self-reflection and recognition of parallel process occurring.


    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

    1. Participants will be able to describe at least 3 basic assumptions of IFS.

       2. Participants will be able to identify at least 2 IFS methods used to enhance the Self-to-part relationship.

       3. Participants will be able to discuss at least 1 strategy utilized to identify a target part.

    Parking: Designated parking for The Chicago School is located on the top level of the parking structure located immediately behind the Stadium Tower building (go around the right side of the building). Please pull a ticket at the parking gate and proceed to the top floor of the parking structure. Parking is free with validation, or $15 without. Please do not park in the surface level visitor or restaurant lots.

    On site: Please look for OC-CAMFT board members that will guide you to the elevator and correct classroom. You will be unable to gain access to the correct floor without assistance. If you are running late, please check in with the security desk.
