COURSE DETAILS

Description: 
The course explores various topics in human sexuality related to BDSM including historical and cultural contexts of sexual behavior, sexual disorders, sexual belief systems, sex research, sexual orientation, and gender issues. The course will also address individuation/differentiation and relational aspects of sexuality, therapist awareness of their own sexual attitudes, and the complexities of sexual identity and behavior.


Learning Objectives: 

1. Identify 2 key differences between BDSM and Kink

2. Explain 3 differences between IPV and BDSM

3. Distinguish between 2 paraphilic disorders, and consensual BDSM practices.

4. Explain 5 common misconceptions of BSDM

5. Identify 3 systemic issues that contribute to disparities in treating Kinky clients

6. Identify 3 pathologies that are not suitable to engage in BDSM.

7. Specify 3 Legal & Ethical considerations when integrating BDSM into psychotherapy.

8. Identify 3 potential therapeutic challenges that can arise when incorporation BDSM into psychotherapy

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER

Dr. Michael Grey PsyD, LMFT, ABS, is a Chicago School Alumni, and current adjunct faculty. Dr. Grey is the CEO and Founder of Grey Insight, a trauma-informed, sex-positive practice specializing in Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) Mental Health. Dr. Grey works with many diverse populations within the SGM community including LGBTQ+, Consensual Non-Monogamous & Polyamorous relationships, BDSM/Kink, Sex Workers, and Adult Content Creators. Dr. Grey is a board-certified Sexologist (24088), through the American Board of Sexology, and has contributed to both the professional, and academic fields with the publication of his doctoral dissertation “The G.R.E.Y. Method a Psychotherapist’s Guide to Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) Affirmative Therapeutic Practices: A Delphi Consensus Study.” Dr. Grey’s research allowed him to construct a comprehensive didactic training manual to effectively provide Marriage and Family Therapists with the appropriate training and skills to provide effective and affirming psychotherapy. Dr. Grey is a Clinical Fellow with AAMFT and a Clinical Member of CAMFT, AASECT, and the American Board of Sexology.

CE CREDIT INFORMATION

  • Course meets the qualifications for 1 hour of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
  • Orange County Chapter of CAMFT is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (Provider #59405) to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs.  Orange County Chapter of CAMFT maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content.
  • Course completion certificates will be award at the end of the program to those attendees who sign-in within 10 minutes of the commencement of the program, sign-out after the program is concluded, and complete and return an evaluation form.
