  • Recording of the workshop followed by a test. Must score 70% or better with unlimited attempts.

Description: 

This workshop will help you better understand the diagnosis of OCD, break down what obsessions and compulsions really are, and explore how OCD differs from everyday habits, developmental stages, and other DSM-5 disorders. You will learn how to identify true danger to self or others versus harm-themed obsessions, gain basic understanding of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and recognize how some forms of psychotherapy may inadvertently worsen OCD symptoms.es.


Educational Goals

  • Understand OCD, including the diagnosis and evidenced based treatment for OCD.
  • -Differentiate OCD from other disorders.
  • -Identify harm themed obsessions in OCD vs. true danger to self or others.
  • Gain a basic understanding of ERP, and why this treatment is used for OCD.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define obsessions and compulsions.
  2. Define Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
  3. Identify other mental health disorders that present as obsessions and/or compulsions but are not classified as OCD.
  4.  Differentiate between OCD and other mental health disorders that involve obsessions and/or compulsions.
  5. Distinguish OCD treatment approaches from those used in other mental health disorders.

I.    Understand OCD 

a. Define OCD, obsessions, and compulsions

b. Identify harm OCD vs. true danger to self or others.

II.  Differentiating OCD 

        a. Differentiate behaviors and developmental stages from OCD.

        b. Differentiate other DSM-5 disorders from OCD

III. Utilizing ERP in treatment 

        a. Dysfunctional beliefs/thinking in OCD

b. Some psychological approaches can make OCD worse

c. Role of compulsions in OCD.

IV. What ERP looks like.

a. Before starting ERP (3 main tasks)

c. ERP examples

d. ERP guidelines

V.   Other considerations in treating OCD.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER


Amy Herter, LMFT, has provided private‐practice psychotherapy since 1999, specializing in anxiety, OCD, panic attacks, phobias, depression, skin picking, and trichotillomania. She holds advanced training in OCD and related disorders through the Behavioral Therapy Training Institute (BTTI) and the Psychological Training Institute (PTI), and applies cognitive-behavioral techniques in her work.

Collaborating closely with clients, Amy fosters present‐moment awareness and helps them build rich, fulfilling lives—particularly those struggling with distressing intrusive thoughts. By equipping fellow therapists with these evidence-based methods, she extends their impact to even more individuals.

  • Course meets the qualifications for 1.5 hour of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

    • Orange County Chapter of CAMFT is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (Provider #59405) to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs.  Orange County Chapter of CAMFT maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content.

      • Course completion certificates will be award at the end of the program to those attendees who sign-in within 10 minutes of the commencement of the program, sign-out after the program is concluded, and complete and return an evaluation form.
