Barbara Kingsolver’s new bestselling novel, Lacuna, is set in Mexico with our young hero working first as a plaster mixer for Diego Rivera, then as a cook for Frida who encourages him in his creative writing. Kingsolver’s wonderful psychological portraits of these great Mexican artists occasions this review of Kahlo’s psychologically penetrating art. Kahlo’s artwork has a special appeal to therapists because of its emotional impact, particularly on issues that affect women in our practices. She represents physical and emotional pain, the traumas of abuse and betrayal, and the multiple connections with her body and nature.
Through the study of Kahlo’s art, we may gain an awareness of women's issues that we can recognize in our own female clients--struggles inherent to being a woman that are often overlooked when we listen to our women clients from predominately male-oriented perspectives. With these insights, we can help our women clients not only in the "traditional" sense of using interventions to address presenting symptoms, but in guiding the rediscovery of their true femininity--perhaps a part of themselves that has been forgotten or discouraged, given the tremendous demands our society puts on women to play so many roles simultaneously.
Learning Goals:
- To achieve an understanding of Kahlo’s depth psychological self portraits
- To know how rooted our minds are in relationships—to our loves and to nature
- To experience the impact of emotional and physical pain as well as the traumas of neglect, abuse, and betrayal
