This course examines the ways applied contemporary psychoanalytic theory, particularly Intersubjective Systems Theory, with its focus on recognition and mutuality, has refined and expanded our understanding of mental processes and clinical interaction, modifying therapeutic dynamics in ways that promote therapist-client resonance.

In this course, Dr. Heller will be covering the following:

  • Exploring developmental factors and transitional space, origins of creativity and an expanded definition of the unconscious to include unformulated experience, participants will begin to think innovatively about the shared psychological space in which we work.
  • Preverbal experience and the transference-countertransference milieu will be examined from contemporary psychoanalytic perspectives.
  • The elemental languages of intersubjective communication (conscious and unconscious, verbal and non-verbal) will be introduced and explored as ways to work effectively in psychological space, including: reverie and the analytic third; Lacan and linguistic elements of language; somatic language and non-verbal body communication; the language of dreams; and the language of enactment.
